You know those cute inspirational quotes people post all the
time on Facebook or Tumblr? The ones that are like, “Don’t be afraid to be who
you are.” Or, “Do what makes you happy.” Or, “Don’t let anyone tell you that
what makes you happy is wrong.” Or, “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those
who mind don’t matter & those who matter don’t mind.” Or, “All the
beautiful things in life are not seen, nor touched, but are felt in the heart.”
Etc.
Yeah those bother me. It’s stupid
and silly, but they do. Let me explain. I’m very picky about quotes, like they
have to be true in order for me to completely like them. Sometimes like the
ones above are a nice thought, but they don’t apply to everyone or they just aren’t
true. The most obvious one is the last one I wrote. Um, I see and touch
beautiful things all the time, I don’t know about you. Are you saying no one is
beautiful because people see and touch other people all the time. Yeah I think
beautiful things are felt in the heart but I don’t think they are only felt in the heart.
The second to last one I posted is
also not true. The ones who matter are not gonna accept everything you do and
say. They are gonna disagree with you sometimes. Your parents are gonna mind if
you want to run away and become a playboy bunny or a drug dealer—well at least
my parents would. Do you see what I’m saying? Nice try whoever wrote that
quote, but no.
I also look at the, “don’t be afraid
to be who you are” and, “do what makes you happy” quotes with slight annoyance.
What if a serial killer and/or rapist were reading that? If killing and/or
raping people makes them happy then you are basically giving them permission to
continue to do that. Or what if eating paint or cutting yourself makes you
happy? I know, I know, I’m going a little overboard with this, but do you see
my point? I still like those quotes, they just aren’t meant to be analyzed like
that I guess. I might even use them sometimes, but they will forever bother me;
some more than others.
